Summer Holidays

I thought it might be good for people to be able to share something about things they are getting up to over the Summer. We don't always see each other as frequently so here is the place to catch up. I'm also trying to redress the balance of all the fantastically intellectual discussions found so far in his forum. Please feel free to share your adventures Smile and make us all smile.

Well, we don't have summer here, but this morning I learnt how to make pumpkin milk shake - wicked!

Instead of summer we have rainy season - so am trying to work faster than the weeds in the garden - so far they are winning.

Also have started tennis lessons. Watch out for me next Wimbledon (not!)

we don't have summer here either Jannine!!! Unless you count today. At least we haven't had floods here. James' parents in laws house in Pangbourne near Reading is under 4 inches of water. Not nice.

Chris and I are off on Friday morning for 5 days in Horton in Ribblesdale and are hoping for better weather. Planning to visit Skipton on the way on Friday, Clapham street stalls on Saturday then a walk by the river near Stainthorpe. Sunday and Monday a drive around the area visiting the various villages and a walk to Malham Tarn and Malham Cove
Tuesday calling at Settle for their market on way home. Will post a report when we are back.

Hi everyone

We are just back from five days away staying in Horton in Ribblesdale. We had a great time as summer arrived at last!

We found some great info on the Skipton website before we went. A walk round Skipton which we used on Friday (after we had

looked at the market) and some great walks in the area plus a drive round with detailed instructions and photos by 'Cragface'

We stayed at the Crown Hotel which had been recommended by one of the walkers from the Jubilee walkers that David goes out with on Wednesdays.

Lovely location, good food, nice rooms, homely, friendly and open fires in both of the pub lounges each evening. You can tell we haven't had much of a summer can't you.

On Saturday we went to a street market in Clapham and then did a walk from Langcliffe to Staincliffe visiting the huge and amazing Hoffma Kiln used in the production of slake lime and returning along the banks of the river Ribble.

Sunday we went to Settle Christian Fellowship and then had a fifty mile drive round visiting various villages where we stopped for an amble.

Monday,- James, who had come down to Richmond in the morning to order some floorboards for their new loft conversion, came on and joined us in Malham and we had a great walk to Janet's Foss, Gordale Scar and Malham Cove (where there were views of a peregrine falcon and kestrels) James came back with us for a meal at the hotel.

We had lovely views at a couple of meals of a little shrew digging in the lawn outside the window. David got some photos.

The hotel tried to undercharge us by a night and missed off our final evening meal. They gave us four nights for the price of three for being honest.

On Tuesday we went to Settle where there was a market on , had lunch at Ye Old Naked Man cafe and then meandered home.

What a great mini break and only just over 200 miles in the car altogether.

We also enjoyed visiting various craft shops (well Chris did) and outdoor shops.

Thank you Lord for lovely time.

Chris is off to visit her sister near Alicante for six days next Wednesday, David will probably go up to Durham for a few days to help James and Jenny
with cleaning and painting. Chris is working through the summer and the business is going well with lots to encourage. She now has her own website at http://kidsrockwithchris.com/

Guess I'll share my experiences.

I have had wonderful summer in Italy.
I have undertaken some research in an area I had previously very little experience in, so I managed to learn a lot. It will hoepfully lead ot continued collaborations.

I have seen some beautiful sites, pisa, roma and most of the rest toscana other than firenze.
I have also met some fantastic people, absolutely some of the loveliest people I have met. Kinda reminded me that we are made in Gods image =]

and to be terribly british... the weather here was lovely all summer..... though getting to sleep for the first 2 months in student accomodation was hard 30+ degrees C at night in the room....

Kenya Adventure

David and I had a fantastic time in Kenya. We spent 4 days at Turtle Bay Beach Resort. Next we went on a Safari in Tsavo East and West Safari Park. Saw loads of animals but only 1 lion and no rhinos! Then we went back to Turtle Bay for a rest - phew! - although David did a Scuba diving course. Smile Finally we spent 5 nights with Steve Ros and Laura Bagwell in Nairobi. That was wonderful. It was great to live with them for a few days and share their life. We met loads of their friends and colleagues and even went to an open day at Laura's school. While we were there Ros took us to the Elephant orphanage, a Giraffe sanctuary and a tea farm - brilliant.

We are really grateful to God for this opportunity to travel and experience His world. - David and Janet R

It Was All Greek To Me!

J and I had 11 nights on Corfu. A beautiful island though, having intended to hire a car, I chickened out when I found how often you face a 60 seater coach coming at you down narrow streets I would hesitate to take our Fiesta down. After all we had gone to reduce stress levels not increase them

Instead it was a mixture of days trips and reading in the sun. Most interesting trip being a day in Albania, still a 3rd world country, and striking to think that 20+ years ago YWAM were smuggling in Bibles.

I used a large part of my 20kg baggage allowance for books. The most challenging being Richard Hays' "The Moral Vision of the New Testament" and the most fascinating being his "Echoes of Scripture in the Letters of Paul". I had never realised how often Paul alludes to the OT let alone quotes from it. So that's what all those references in the margin of my Bible are for!! Those plus Tom Wright's "What St Paul Really Said" and Desmond Tutu's "No Future Without Forgiveness" generally account for the rest of my tan.

One word of warning. When the hotel guide says you might hear the singing from the bar it actually means you will hear every syllable of every would be Elvis up and down the street in the 4 nearest bars!!!

And why do the Greeks think the English have chips with everything?
